in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011. Looking at the chart more closely, in 1918, the percentage of families living in their own

accommodation

was just under 80%,

whereas

that of

households

borrowing

accommodation

was just over 20%, which was the lowest in that period. In 1939, approximately 68% of England and Wales people rented

houses

which decreased compared to 1918,

while

around 30% of both countries purchased

houses

which increased compared to 1918. In 1953, the figures for both possessing and renting remained the same. In 1971, the figures for owned and rented

accommodation

were identical, at about 50%,

while

in 1981, the percentage of

households

purchasing

houses

soared to 60%,

whereas

that of people renting

houses

shrank to 40%. In 1991, the

figure

for families living in their own

accommodation

still had an upward trend and reached just under 70%,

while

the

figure

for

households

borrowing

houses

had a downward trend and dropped to just over 30%. In 2011, the

figure

in owned

accommodation

finished an upward trend and drop to about 65% from just under 70%,

while

figure

for

households

in renting

accommodation

increased to about 35% from just over 30%.
