Alcohol was also medication. I drank to quiet angst or because I was lonesome. I drank, it took years to realize, because I had clinical depression. Eventually I treated the depression but kept drinking. Alcohol was my stress-reducer, my reality fighter, the conferrer of artificial joys. Life changed in my 40s. I married, and with my husband, adopted our beloved daughter, now 17. Working from home, I made dinner, drinking wine with a neighbor mom. My morning-after headaches were worsening, though. Nights, rather than reading or chatting with my husband, I’d crash. I feared my drinking was destroying brain cells. I’d written about how alcohol is harder on women than men and that worried me, too. Some years ago, to prove I had control, I cut down to five nights a week. It was tough. How could I not drink after a rough day? I couldn’t manage two consecutive sober nights. Achieving my two sober nights was always an exercise in military-level strategizing. But every Sunday, I felt virtuous. An actual alcoholic couldn’t skip any nights, I thought. But I could. What does it mean to have a serious drinking problem? The answer is surprisingly vague. “Alcoholism” isn’t an actual diagnosis. In 1980, the American Psychiatric Association’s authoritative Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders established two different classifications: alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence. In 2013, the D.S.M. combined the categories to create “alcohol use disorder,” a spectrum ranging from mild to severe, based not on how much someone drinks but on how many of 11 behavioral or psychological symptoms a person has. Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has its own standards, focused more on quantity of alcoholic consumption. Seven drinks per week or fewer is considered safe for women, 14 or fewer for men. But guidelines fluctuate internationally, according to a Stanford University study from 2016. In Canada or France, you can drink more weekly and be considered “low risk.” Moreover, a recent study in The Lancet concluded alcohol is so tough on health that there’s no safe level.
Children today have to face the pressure from different aspects of modern life, such as education, society and business. I would analyze the reasons and provide solutions. The most evident reason would be vicious competition in today’s world. Children who want to study at a famous university have to achieve better scores than their peers. In addition, they have to handle relationships with people around them. They have been told that social skill can benefit them to get opportunities in society in the future. As a consequence, some students try to make friends with children who have good scores or excellent family backgrounds. On the other hand, children also get pressure from their families and peers. At home, a child may be told that one of his cousins is excellent, so he should learn from him. At school, a child might suffer bully because he doesn’t have famous band clothes or he comes from a poor family. The solution for the first condition is to encourage them to learn for interests rather than scores. Since interests are the best teacher which is a guide to tell children how to learn well so that children don’t have to treat the? study as a task but some interesting things. For the second condition, parents should learn better methods to educate their children. They can relive the children’s stress by companionship or tell them what is the best friendship. At school, teachers have the responsibility to tell students that they should not judge a book from its cover and do not laugh at the students who need help. In conclusion, education is an important responsibility for the whole society. So more reasons for the children’s pressure need to be found and tackled so that they can grow up healthily. Today, an increasing number of parents have chosen to remove their children from conventional schools and teach them at homes by tutors or by parents themselves. From my perspective, the disadvantages are more significant than the benefits. Admittedly, there are some advantages for those children who study at home. For example, a flexible schedule meets the family needs and customized learning plans may inspire some children’s interests, so many of them can learn much faster and deeper in some subjects than their peers. For those children suffered from bullying at school, homeschooling can not only make them feel safe under the protection of their parents but also strengthen their family bonds. All of these appear perfect as those parents claimed in the short term. However, judging from a general development in the long run, there are many disadvantages for home-schooled students. They can barely obtain widely knowledge as their peers. In China, students normally learn eleven to twelve subjects with professional teachers who graduated with(from?) specific majors. Conversely, parents can hardly offer professional education in various subjects as school teachers do. Even they can hire professional tutors teaching at home, that still cannot compare with school education, let alone it is a big financial burden from a family. Additionally, students not only get knowledge at school but also practise social skills with their peers, such as communication skills and conflict solving methods. It is impossible for children to learn( Students cannot learn, which expression is better?) from their families when they study at home. In conclusion, education is a serious problem (topic?) for everyone, especially for children. Homeschooling methods can take many advantages for children, whereas they cannot replace school education. The cons outweigh the pros apparently. Therefore, parents should consider cautiously before making decisions.

It is sometimes argued that the crime rate and delinquent behavior could be reduced by doing the death penalty. In my opinion, it would be wrong to take someone's right to life. There are several reasons why capital punishment should be abandoned. Firstly, the death penalty might be equivalent to killing or murdering someone, and we do not have the right to deter someone to live. Secondly, criminals can re-education and re-socialize, and well be aware of the outcome and consequences of committing a crime. Finally, innocent people who wrongly commit would be executed. As a result, many families might put in many difficult situations, and many children would loss being with their parents and foster in a peaceful atmosphere. It is also argued that the crime rate could not be effectively reduced by killing offenders. On the other hand, capital punishment could act as a deterrent to others implementing crimes. Therefore, this eliminates the possibility of criminals re-offending. Furthermore, many young people would learn that breaking the laws could follow serious punishments, which certainly execute the murder or offender. There are also many cost-effective punishments which are low cost relating to imprisonment. Another reason is that criminals who commit heinous crimes should be put to death to protect society and reduce the people’s fear, so the offenders could not pose a threat to others. In conclusion, I do not believe that the death penalty could reduce aggressive behaviors and deter criminals from implementing crimes.

Rishabh Varma Rishabh Varma, A Number's Person / Newbie @ Data Science Answered Jan 23, 2017 · Author has 124 answers and 290k answer views There are 2 Types of IELTS students who are concerned with the Examination process: One who really struggles with the day-to-day usage of English. One who wants to score Higher Bands for their very benefits in Work permits and college admissions. Writing: I cannot give much detail on how to prepare for the Writing part (I scored 7 Myself). Letter writing (General Module) or the Data Analysis (Academic module) carries less weightage, so concentrate more on the Essay Writing part. All I can say is that stick to the basic structure of Essay writing. Para 1: Reinstate the topic and take your stand on it. For the rest of the Essay, you can either say FOR the topic or AGAINST the topic. This part is important as you should have enough Data to speak for in the remaining essay. Para 2-3-4: Take 1 example in each Para and give details explanation of the same. Para 5: Mention the counter side of the argument I.e If you have been saying FOR the topic up till now, give 1 example of AGAINST part. But make sure that you indirectly take your discussion to what you have been saying up till now. (Example: You have said that eating Tomatoes is good for health. NOW in the 5th Para you need to discuss one drawback of the consumption of tomatoes, but sway the discussion towards how the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.) This will give strong signal to the examiner that you are completely aware of what you are talking about and that you are Afraid to take the Counter Examples. Para 6: Just summarize the entire discussion and give concluding sentence. DON'T add new details in the conclusion Para. It's a Red Cross. GRAMMER: You need to polish your grammer skills. It need not be at a high level though. You should provide a fer Complex Structured sentences every now and then. One such complex structure should consist: Verbs Nouns-Pronouns Subject-verb agreement Modifiers Idioms Parallelism Tenses SAMPLE ESSAY: Do look at the sample essays but do not panic looking at the language. Try and structure the sample in your own way. Those samples are 8.5 Bands and Indians usually get the least in the Writing Section. Speaking: If you are planning to take Classes for improving your communication skills, Please don't. Fluency comes from Practice. You need to work with the English language at least 3 months prior to your Exam date, if you are really struggling with the language. I will try and provide tips as I discuss the Different stages of this section. Section 1: This is an intro section. The interviewer will ask you about yourself and few details of things that matter to you or are related to your life. You will find tons of sample question for this section in the Internet. Topics range from: Hobby to Family to Education to Job to Flowers. You need to speak on any given topic whether related to you or not. Section 2: Cue Card. Again sample available. Make sure that you speak for at least 90 sec. Also you need to keep in mind that the Third Section is somehow related to what you say in this section. So do not exaggerate on things that you will find hard to explain in Third Section. Important thing here is speak for the complete length and make sense at the same time. PRACTICE: It won't take more than 30 mins per day to practice a range of topics. So make sure that you practice enough questions to be Exam Ready. I practiced a lot but on the exam day got topics that were completely different. The key for me way the fluency that I was able to achieve during practice and even though I was short of Ideas on the D-Day, it went well for me. There is no Written rule as to what you need to get 7 as the Interviewer is different and questions are random. Just practice and gain enough info on different topics and you will surely ace the Examination. I hope I was of some help. I hate diplomatic answers myself, but cannot help you here with anything else. Best of Luck!

In the modern world, families have become more independent and the part people play at home also has changed significantly. I believe this is a positive trend in terms of the quality of life. Households are increasingly becoming less rigid as people become more independent. As the society develops, a growing number of people, especially young people who value privacy and space, have chosen to live apart from their parents and have an independent life. This allows them to make their own decisions in most cases without the interference from their parents. Meanwhile, women enjoy equality in many parts of the world today, so many of them have decided to enter the job market like their husbands to have a fulfilling career, instead of staying at home. This change in the family structure not only liberates women from their traditional gender based role but also benefits men, because when the family has more earnings, the financial burden on husbands is lessened. I believe this is a good thing as an independent dual-income household can help people enjoy a high-quality life. When people live their own lives, it considerably reduces the family tension that often happens in an extended family. Staying away from those conflicts and arguments caused by generation gap, young people and their parents can both feel happy. What is more, as the wife also earns salaries, a family has more income sources. When people have disposable income, they will be able to spend on what they like or want. For example, they can have an exotic holiday or buy a luxury car. They are less confined to a limited budget, and this contributes a lot to the improvement in their standards of living. In conclusion, families are changing significantly in terms of their structure and the role people play within its boundaries. This has a positive influence on households due to the fact it enables people to live a high-quality life. Do you have an essay on this topic?
