It is an established fact that most dwellers in metropolitan areas know very little about their

neighbours, which is
neighbours which is
said to be a contributor to the continued loss of communal cohesiveness. In
this
piece I will explore the possible causes of
this
untoward trend and attempt to proffer solutions that can help members of the society build strong bonds with each other. The social space has evolved over time, so has neighbourhoods and interactions with
neighbors
a person who lives (or is located) near another
neighbours
. With the advent of people securing their spaces with perimeter fence, it is noticeable that there is very little interaction between people living in areas with fenced properties.
For example
a 2019 metropolitan newspaper polled residents in Lagos and found out that 60% of people living in

didn’t know the person living in the
next
block.
Secondly
, most people resident in cities have demanding jobs and are too busy to interact with their neighbours.
This
is due to the fact that many good jobs are in cities and a huge number of them are time consuming.
Thus individuals

Thus, individuals
would rather spend any free time gotten off work at home resting and catching up with their families and close acquaintances
instead
of meeting new people in their neighbourhood. One nice way
this
problem can be handled is by making provisions for recreational areas in the planning of metropolitan settlements. It has been shown that neighbourhoods with parks and social clubs have a higher rate of bonding with each other compared to areas without
such
facilities. Is is
also
noted that settlements with recreational facilities have a lower crime rate.
Furthermore
, people can be encouraged to interact with each other if there are social activities like concerts and sporting events they love are being held around their homes which makes it easy for them to attend. Though it is obvious that most people don’t know a large number of their
neighbors
a person who lives (or is located) near another
neighbours
, it’s imperative that we realise the benefits of getting to know those we share the same living space with.
This
will foster the sense of community in the long run.
