Companies spend millions each year on advertising online, in magazines and on billboards. These adverts can encourage people to buy goods that they do not really need. What are the positive and negative affects of consumerism?

People can be driven to purchase more and more things by using smart adverts, and
that is
the reason, why companies spend lots of money each year on online advertisements.
Consumerism
can bring about more benefits for both society and individuals, but there are
also
drawbacks to be taken into account.
Firstly
, one evident benefit of the
consumption
of more goods in a certain society is that it can positively lead to more economic advantages to that society in the long run.
This
sends a powerful message to foreign companies to invest their money

market because these companies will be able to sell their products smoothly. These companies will create more job opportunities for the local people, and
this
will result in increasing the standard way of life

community.
For example
, the Egyptian government has recently reported that the
consumption
of the Turkish goods jumped by 50 percent compared to 25 percent in the
last
year, and
this
was connected to the advertisements that have been done by the Turkish firms.
Secondly
,
consumerism
helps companies to be more creative in advertising their products and how they can subtly persuade people to buy things.
On the other hand
, one problem of
consumerism
is that it negatively leads people to unnecessary spending by using effective advertising. To put it another way, people often buy things only because of the image of power, success, and glamour associated with them.
For instance
, people generally purchase more things because they were

convinced by an advert on TV. Another negative aspect of
consumerism
is that the more

more waste they create.
This
will give rise to more harmful consequences for the environment.
For instance
, around three-quarters of all the wastage in China are coming from the
consumption
of goods.
Finally
, children are considered the main reason for the
consumerism
to grow up as they are easily influenced by commercials and
then
pester their parents to buy certain products. In the long term,
this
will cause a serious problem because studies have shown a clear link between the regular
consumption
of fast food and obesity.

Include an introduction and conclusion

A conclusion is essential for IELTS writing task 2. It is more important than most people realise. You will be penalised for missing a conclusion in your IELTS essay.

The easiest paragraph to write in an essay is the conclusion paragraph. This is because the paragraph mostly contains information that has already been presented in the essay – it is just the repetition of some information written in the introduction paragraph and supporting paragraphs.

The conclusion paragraph only has 3 sentences:

  • Summary
  • Restatement of thesis
  • Prediction or recommendation

Example:

To summarize, a robotic teacher does not have the necessary disciple to properly give instructions to students and actually works to retard the ability of a student to comprehend new lessons. Therefore, it is clear that the idea of running a classroom completely by a machine cannot be supported. After thorough analysis on this subject, it is predicted that the adverse effects of the debate over technology-driven teaching will always be greater than the positive effects, and because of this, classroom teachers will never be substituted for technology.

Start your conclusion with a linking phrase. Here are some examples:

  • In conclusion
  • To conclude
  • To summarize
  • Finally
  • In a nutshell
  • In general
