The main themes of the short story “The Tenth Man” are the pain of the war and the recovering from those wounds. The theme “the pain of the war” is illustrated through the imagery of the village and people’s appearance, and the recovering from hardship is developed through the imagery of village and people. At the beginning of the story, the imagery of the village and people’s appearance are terrible and miserable. The narrator mentions, “now he was shrunken and withered, his clothes were ragged and, most important, he had no face” (1), and Every day, “the dry goods merchant left his house and walked towards the railway station”(2) where trains do not come waiting for his wife. Furthermore, the "synagogue"(1) and "marketplace"(1) in the lower village were burned by German troops. To begin with, the imagery of people and the village were devastating by Germany, and those appearances symbolize the pain and wound of the war. In the first quote, through hyperbole, Chaim is expressed that was very dirty as having no face. In addition, in the quote, Chaim is compared by no face through “as”, thus, this is a metaphor. Secondly, through the behavior of the merchant waiting for his wife in the railway station where trains do not come, it shows he is crazy, thus, it is allusion. In fact, all their changes are due to war. Consequently, these quotes illustrate people and places that were hurt by the war, therefore, the quotes related to the theme “pain and wound of war”. However, the theme “recovering from pain of war” is developed through the imagery of the changed appearance of the village. To be specific, the terrible situations in the village gradually improve as the story progresses. The narrator mentions “Spring blossomed suddenly as befitted the first spring of freedom. The trees put forth buds. The storks returned” (1), and “The days kept passing, fragrant and bright. The trains began to run”(2). The quotes represent passing the time, the wounds of the war are recovered, therefore, this is related with the theme “recovering from pain and wounds of the war”. In addition, the first quote likened spring to flowers and expressed the blooming of flowers, thus, this is a metaphor. Furthermore, through the forth buds and blooming and returning storks, it implies that spring is back. Therefore, allusion is used. Secondly, the train running again symbolizes that the conflict has ended and the village has been restored to some extent from the effects of war. In conclusion, the theme of the pain and wounds of the war is illustrated through the image of people and the village. Additionally, the positive changes of the village contribute greatly to developing the theme of recovering from the war.
